The Blade of Pix’el

So this is my first foray into the world of pixel art (that is if you don’t count my avatar, and a couple of unseen experiments… which we’re not… so this is my FIRST EVER pixel art picture!). After admiring some work from the ridiculously talented JunkBoy (currently working at Mojang), I feel this is a little crude but that’s what I’m all about. Let me know what you think!

Oh, and the story goes that a ghastly Pirate Dread Lord, Eric Blacksbane stole the Blade of Pix’el from the flamboyant, lazy King Jon Falkirk the II. His majesty, upon finding his most prized possession had been stolen, hired the lands most talented Tracker/Cowboy named Doug and charged him with the safe return of his dagger and the culprits’s head. After learning of the Blade of Pix’el’s true worth Doug decided to find the weapon for himself. Alas, the blade was lost at sea in an almighty battle filled with smoke and fire. Eric, Jon and Doug plunged into the ice cold water as their ships sank. The blade glittered in the murky depths below. They were never seen again. The blade on the other hand washed ashore several days later. At night, it is said you can hear the bickering and howling of the three men who fought so hard to claim the blade for their own.

The End.

Flaming skulls… OF DOOM!

Thought I’d best delve back into a certain OLD OLD OLD game (*cough cough* Davey Jones) that went on the back-burner while I sorted my life out. Life still not sorted, so I’ll put that on the back-burner for a while and let Davey have my full attention. See below for the original straight outta Compton/my sketchbook.

Hope you like them!

Recently finished personal piece. My next illustration will no doubt feature a character with monstrous arms and a bemused grin.

It’s in the game…

… literally.

So, I’ve been super busy sorting out my life and making very grown up decisions. I’ll put a blog post up about my plans in a couple of weeks – but for now, please feel free to have a look at the below visual titbits for some Davey Jones – Lost Souls (TM & © 2011 All right reserved etc etc etc).

Here is one of my FAVVVVVOURITE pieces from the game – THE SHOP!!! It was lovely doing it and every time I revisited the file I couldn’t help but add something new to the clutter. I wanted to make it look jam packed and even though I feel I could have probably crammed some more rolled up rugs and jars with body parts in there – I’m mightily happy with the way it turned out (also, thank you Monkey Island for being one of THE best games I have ever played and for showing me what a background should look like)!

After some very clever motion tweening in Flash CS4 last night – I put the finishing touches to the basic rig that we’ll be using in the game. I built it in collaboration with a very clever body called Mr. Craig Beswetherick. The major advantage is its ability to import items of clothing from the Flash library directly into a number of key movieclips (arm, leg, foot etc) so that when you buy items from the shop, it will update your character with the relevant clothing and animate in exactly the same way.

(If you didn’t follow what I just said, it basically means its going to look really pretty when you buy things from the shop and look at your character afterwards)

I’ve also worked on some flotsam that will drift lazily around in the background. Here is a derelict ship. Luvely!

Anyway, have a lovely weekend one and all. I’m off to a wedding (huge congratulations to Aidan and Fiona) with my newly altered 1940’s green suit. I’m going to be the belle of the ball!

Greetings internet person! Sleuth of the web! Secret watcher! Ho! Lay down your arms and join me for a dram of grog!

I’ve been super-dooper busy of late working my little buns off on various projects, but I’m back! And true to my word (see my previous post) I am still on my quest to take my initial sketches and scribbles, and develop a process to create a final render.

Well… behold! A sketch of a pirate!

… and here is a rendered version.

I’m really happy with the way this guy turned out, but I’ve got so much more that I want to refine and do on him.

This is only the beginning! Watch this space! Thundercats! Hooooo!

P.S. Please feel free to leave your comments with any criticism what so ever. This is a learning process for me, and I’m keen to learn from my wonderful peers. Wuv woo.
